Dry Fly - The Inspiration

“Fishing is, by its very nature, an uncertain and interrogatory endeavor. As in writing, painting, or any of a hundred other pursuits – the angler moves out of the realm of the known and into a creative realm of question” - Mark Browning

What I love about fly fishing and fly tying is the perpetual problem solving. Every day on the water is unique and brings its own special challenges. The air temp, water flow, cloud cover, time of day, and the location. Nothing is ever exactly the same. Sitting at the fly tying bench raises its own quandaries. What pattern, hook, material, size and color. Fly fishing and fly tying challenges the mind, nurtures one’s creativity and feeds the soul.

Where do I want to fish today? What time should I head out? What fly should I tie on? I wonder if I should tie my own flies? Each and every nuance another challenge and opportunity for creative problem solving.

The spirit of problem solving spawned Dry Fly.

Owner/Founder

I love to fly fish, I tie my own flies, I paint, I travel and I started the Dry Fly fishing supply company. I am lucky enough to now live in Livingston Manor NY, in the Catskill Mountains, on the legendary water that is the birthplace of America’s great dry fly fishing and fly tying tradition.

I don’t know how many times I have been asked “What fly are you fishing? Are you dry fly only?” My answer these days is usually a Catskill classic pattern such as “An Adams. I pretty much only fish dry flies.” I’ve been fly fishing for over 20 years, still learning a little more each and every time I head out. When I fish for trout, I prefer to fish a dry fly. Not because I think it is a pure form of the art, but simply because of the childlike joy and excitement I feel when a trout rises up out of the water, breaking the thin surface between his world and ours, and takes my fly. All the better if I tied the fly on my own vice. - Marc
